Two weeks into what seems like two years in Taos

I haven’t been in Taos for two weeks just yet – Tuesday eve it will be so – but time moves slow here –  I’ve made it as such.  Imposed solitude.  Turning down invites to chill with the other artists,  to go to a Bob Marley dance party at a gallery,  and right now I could be drinking and watching the Superbowl with some passionate intellectuals … but no,  I am in my casita … blogging … what a DORK!

A quick update on how I am spending my artist residency – the spiral nature of my time thus far.  First – motivation,  enthusiasm,  excitement spiraled to overwhelm,  exhaustion,  lethargy and then back around slowly to productivity,  awe,  creative bliss … Emotions; they are always shifting,  changing like clouds in the sky or waves in the sea.  The thing is,  underneath all of that emotional stormage and weather there’s a clear blue space.  And I work with that.  I try to work with that.

Hey there music lover!

And how blissful it is to love music!  I’ve been digging in deep,  running with it,  crying with it,  feeling elated by it.  It’s been awhile since I’ve been so excited by listening to music.  Weird,  huh?  I feel like all my senses are hyper lately and the world is fresh and new,  my ears are PERKED.  I hope yours too!

Lots of stuff going on, as usual.  I went to some conferences,   am launching a subscription fanclub thing so you can get hot-of-the-press exclusive song demos and things,  and have some really rad solo shows coming up to round out this CRAZY ASS YEAR.  Read on if you wanna!  xoxoxox

Quality over Quantity

In 2015 I played 90+ shows.  In the Midwest, on the west coast, in the south.  This is nothing compared to the more seasoned full time musicians,  non-stop touring,  living in their vans & buses,  300+ shows a year.  However for me,  doing my own booking and promoting and holding down rent and some yoga teaching in Duluth at the time — it was quite a lot.  I have so many great memories (and alas,  some not so great!) and especially love the travel aspect and connecting with new and old friends.  This country is incredible and huge and its inhabitants vast and varied.

Tuning into your sixth sense with the Ajna Chakra

Your hair is standing on end. You KNEW you shouldn’t have but you did anyway.  You had this feeling in your gut that something was just a little off but you brushed it aside and went ahead.  Your dream last night told you to change your mind but it was just a dream … Something was fishy.  Your head hurt,  your legs were twitchy,  you got chills,  you got butterflies (not the fun kind).  And then,  even though you thought through it and used all of your logic and blasted forth with your plan,  it ALL fell apart.  Maybe you lost some money.  Maybe all of your techie gadgets crashed.  Or worse,  maybe someone betrayed you or an accident befell you.  But you KNEW if you had only listened to that tiny voice or feeling in the background that ALL of this could have been avoided …

Find your voice: throat chakra talk

Small talk,  deep talk,  chit chat,  white lies,  subversion,  “elephants in the room,”  exuberance,  speaking your truth,  singing,  clearing your throat — when it comes to living “authentically” it’s all about your voice.  And well beyond words,  it’s about finding your truth and expressing it.

The 5th chakra is called the Visuddha chakra,  located at the throat and basking in the color blue.  In my last four blog posts I’ve been veering towards the self-help,  self-reflection section of the book store rather than music business tips + news.  In my other life I’m a yoga instructor and have been teaching a series on the chakras to child and family therapists at a community health center.   Chakras,  to those of you wondering WTF,  are energy centers/wheels in our emotional/spiritual bodies and according to yogic,  buddhist and new age belief,  hold keys to our attitudes,  imbalances,  and spiritual growth.  You might find it total BS,  but maybe you’re into self reflection and some of the following may ring true.

Have a heart! [Heart chakra, that is …]

“My heart is twisted,  feels like it’s pounding right out of my chest.  Fried up and crispy; she’s got it wrapped up in beeswax.” – MB “Beeswax” (listen above)

Oooooh,  the heart.  We’ve all got one.  It’s in there pounding away,  pumping blood to the nether regions,  all the way down to our fingertips and toes.  This blog has been by far the most challenging for me to write for some reason.  I’ve been writing a weekly series on the seven major Chakras.  Chakras are energy centers in our body,  and have been cited in Hindu,  Qi Gong, Buddhist and New Age practices.  These energy centers or “wheels” have different emotional characteristics and correlate to physical organs,  cerebral processes and spiritual aspirations.  New Age-y stuff might make you cringe and all week long I’ve been saying “take it or leave it,” but if you are into self reflection (and many of you are artsy types so you probably are into delving into the depths of your fabulous soul),  my hope is to send you away with a few things you can focus on this week to balance your heart.

Solar Plexus Chakra – Transformation, fire & personal power

Greetings!  Welcome to week three of my exploration of the chakras from a yoga and artist perspective.  Chakras are,  according to yogic belief (take it or leave it),  centers of energy throughout our bodies that have specific themes in our lives – physical,  emotional,  spiritual – and can be worked with to bring balance,  awareness and personal growth.  WOO HOO!
